Carers & Abuse of Older Adults Awareness Campaign

Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board are supporting the Norfolk Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Group in a campaign:

  • To raise awareness of abuse in the over 65s
  • To identify and reach perpetrators of abuse in older adults, in order to provide help and support
  • To help older adults' regular contacts, including GPs, family members, friends and neighbours, spot the signs of abuse

The Covid pandemic and varying levels of restrictions have increased domestic abuse contacts in relation to safeguarding adults in all age groups across the country.

NSAB has also noted an increase in contacts to statutory and voluntary organisations from older adults experiencing domestic abuse, including those with care and support needs which would mean that safeguarding adult duties apply.

Outside of the pandemic pressures, supporting older people to engage with domestic abuse services has some specific barriers and challenges.

Domestic abuse is considered more hidden in this age group and is complicated by often having a range of care needs and wider relationship issues. Prevention is dependent on recognition and early intervention, especially in situations where carer stress is evident.

Please make use of the information, poster, postcard and social media jpegs below.

In 2021, NSAB supported the production of 2,000 of the postcards which were then included in a 'well-being' pack for carers. These were distributed across the county between June and September.
