Tagging plan for domestic abuse suspects in draft bill

Domestic abuse suspects face being banned from contacting their victims, drinking alcohol or taking drugs, and face electronic tagging to monitor their movements under a new civil Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPOs). This and other measures are included in the draft Domestic Abuse Bill.

Breaches of any of the conditions of the civil order will be punishable as a criminal offence.

Other measures include tougher sentences for child abusers and more protection for victims who testify in court. There is a new definition of economic abuse - if people are denied access to jobs or money, or forced to take loans.

The government has opened a consultation on the Domestic Abuse Bill.
