Links between domestic abuse and mental illness
Some recent research by Birmingham University has shown that women who experience domestic abuse are three times more likely to develop a serious mental illness. The British Journal of Psychiatry found that they are twice as likely to have a mental illness already.
Official crime figures show that one in four women are likely to experience domestic abuse in their lifetime and experts say that more needs to be done to detect abuse. GPs are trained to spot it although it is often well concealed.
