Increase of 80% in calls to domestic abuse helpline in June

As the UK locked down at the end of March, there was real concern for the safety of those who were in abusive relationships.  Government guidance advised that those who needed to escape to a place of refuge could do so but this was not always practical or possible.  The charity, Refuge, say that 40,000 calls and contacts were made to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline during the first three months of lockdown (Refuge run the helpline).  During June, calls were 80% higher than usual.  These were mostly from women and now, as lockdown restrictions ease, there is a surge in women seeking refuge places to escape their abusers.
