CQC publishes its annual report on monitoring the Mental Health Act

The Care Quality Commisson (CQC) have published their annual report on Monitoring the Mental Health Act. It looks at the use of the Mental Health Act (MHA) in 2018-19 and how providers are caring for patients, and whether patients' rights are being protected.

In response to the exposure of abuse of people with a learning disability at Whorlton Hall by BBC Panorama in May 2019 (see page 12) CQC acknowledges they need to change the way they assess mental health and learning disability wards to better understand their safety and quality, and the experiences of people who use them.

In addition, CQC have commissioned Professor Glynis Murphy to carry out an independent review into how CQC's regulation of services like Whorlton Hall can be improved.
