Since the pandemic, with the change to holding virtual meetings, and the pressure on all participants' time being recognised, we now hold regular webinars which have in part replaced 'guest speakers' who no longer have to travel around the county to attend all five meetings.

This means we also have more time in the partnership meetings to look at the local needs and issues associated with the wider county safeguarding themes.

The topics are chosen in discussion with the LSAPs, their chairs, and the NSAB business group. The speakers try to reflect how the topic relates to the local needs in the county wherever possible, and consider the multi-agency audience of the LSAPs.

The program can flex depending on availability and any other linked needs.

As virtual meetings, we can also open these up to those who are not (yet!) members of their local LSAP, or colleagues of those who do attend. These webinars can also be used as part of any Continuing Professional Development (CPD) required in your role.

One Voice 4 Travellers webinar Tuesday 6 February 2024

We were so pleased that Janie Codona MBE from One Voice 4 Travellers was able to join us for this webinar.    

One Voice 4 Travellers work with and support members of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities, and encourage engagement and participation within the community.  In today's webinar, Janie talked about her role in safeguarding members of the GRT community and highlighted some of the etiquette when visiting those members.  She covered incidents of domestic violence and how one member of the community was treated when he disclosed that he was gay. 

Feedback following the event showed how useful it was to hear about the customers and traditions of the community.  Attendees also enjoyed the informative nature of the webinar and how valuable it was to hear from somebody with lived experience.

Domestic abuse and older adults, Thursday 26 October 2023

Dr Hannah Bows is associate professor in criminal law at Durham Law School, Durham University, and deputy director of the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA). Her research interests are broadly located in the fields of gender, ageing and crime, with particular interest in crimes against, and by, people aged 60 and over.

She is currently three years in to a four year project examining criminal justice outcomes and decision making in cases involving older adults (funded through a British Academy Wolfson Fellowship), and also conducting analysis of domestic abuse of adults aged 60-74 using the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) data.  Outside of academia, she sits as a magistrate in Co Durham and Darlington, and was chair of Age UK Teesside between 2015-20.

The findings from the first three years of domestic abuse data after the age cap was lifted to 74 in 2017 - for the first time there is nationally representative data on domestic abuse against older adults.

Financial Abuse & Safeguarding Weds 17 May 2023

Paul Claxton is a financial abuse and safeguarding officer at Norfolk County Council.  Paul assists financial services teams and social services by investigating, and progressing, concerns of suspected financial abuse - often involving family members, those who hold lasting power of attorney (LPA), appointees and significant others.  Paul joined us for a webinar to talk about his role and shared some anonymised case studies which highlighted the important work that he does.

NCC colleague Neil Ricketts spoke to us in this useful webinar to hear how the Mental Capacity Act links with those who have appointeeship, lasting powers of attorney (LPA) or are deputies, to make decisions on behalf of others.

We were joined by Norfolk County Council's equality, diversion and inclusion officer Claire Charlwood, who presented a webinar to consider what anti-discrimination practice in adult safeguarding looks and feels like, and how partners can work together to address risks posed to vulnerable people with diverse protected characteristics.

Dealing with distressing calls 10 Mar 2022

We were joined by Helen 7 from Norwich Samaritans, outreach, who gave an informative overview of the work of the Samaritans and, in particular, how they cope with distressing calls whilst sharing some tips on good listening practice.  

Almost 100 people from a range of organisations attended this hour long event.

Cuckooing webinar 26 Oct 2021

Detective Chief Inspector Sonia Humphreys provided an illuminating insight into cuckooing at her October webinar for NSAB.  

She explained how cuckooing exploits and creates vulnerabilities, what to look out for and how the multi-agency approach supported by the Vulnerable Adult Risk Assessment Conference (VARAC) can help partners to address this violent risk.

Around 100 colleagues from many different organisations joined us for the webinar.

Mark English is the Modern Slavery and Organised Crime Group co-ordinator for Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies. 

He gave us a very insightful presentation on the many forms of exploitation, using a wide range of examples from his work to bring these to life, and really helping us to understand what this might look like in Norfolk. There was a clear emphasis on prevention, partnership working, and a victim focus that resonates with Making Safeguarding Personal.

We had over 90 people attend this virtual event - it was great to see so many people interested in learning more about exploitation, and taking this knowledge back to their day to day practice and communities.
