Scam alert: cold calls claiming to be bank security

Trading Standards are warning residents after receiving a report of telephone calls claiming to be from bank security, and making claims that the resident's bank account has had several suspicious cash movements.

The recently reported scam asked the resident to send money to a bank account, after the call said that there had been some suspicious cash movements from his account.  The cold caller asked for a transfer of £132, which alerted the resident who proceeded to terminate the call.  The resident was targeted again with similar calls; the first using a different number and also from a withheld number.

If you're concerned about the security of a bank account or credit card, contact your bank or service provider directly using the customer service number printed on your bank card, on a recent statement or via information available on a genuine website or app.  Never use details provided in a cold call.

If you have received a telephone cold call, which you believe to be a scam, you can report it through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, 0808 223 1133.
