New research into financial scams

New research conducted by Aviva, and highlighted in The Aviva Fraud Report launched today, shows that around 1 in 5 people (22pc) have received emails, texts, phone calls and other communications that mention coronavirus, and which they suspect to be a scam.

Almost half of those (46pc) who received a suspected scam communication did not report it and 41pc of those asked said that they didn't know who to report it to.

The communications have related to products, including health, life and car insurance, investments, pensions and annuities.

The impact on the victims of these scams is not just financial, it can have a detrimental effect on people's mental health too.

In June, Action Fraud reported that £5 million had been lost in fraud since February.  Anyone can be a victim of a scam and if you suspect that you are being targeted by financial scammers, then report it to Action Fraud, your financial services provider or the police.
