Modern slavery victims to be supported in new measures
The government has said that a backlog of thousands of modern slavery cases could be eliminated within two years. The latest figures show that 23,000 suspected victims, including children, are waiting for a decision by the Home Office regarding their status. Many victims face long delays before their status as a victim of modern slavery can be confirmed through the national referral mechanism and before they can be given the support that they need.
The Home Office is hiring 200 additional staff to process the cases and they should be in their posts in early 2025.
