LGA evidence on hand car washes

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into the proliferation of unregulated hand car washes. On Tuesday 26 June 2018, Cllr Alan Rhodes, the Local Government Association's (LGA’s) Modern Slavery spokesperson, gave evidence to the inquiry alongside representatives of the car wash industry, petrol stations and the water industry.

Cllr Rhodes highlighted councils’ role in tackling modern slavery, which has been identified as a common occurrence at roadside car washes. He also talked about the need for every new car wash to be subjected to a rigorous planning process, in order to prevent illegal use of water facilities and pollution of drainage systems.
