What to do if you believe someone may have died: Guidance for staff in care and nursing homes
It can be distressing to find someone who may have died, and it can be hard to think clearly about what to do when you might be experiencing shock or stress. We have published a guide for staff in care and nursing homes which covers whether you should attempt CPR - including when the person is very cold and not breathing; what to do if a person has a 'Do Not Attempt Resuscitation' (or DNAR) in place; who to contact if you think someone may have died and the role of the police.
It is vitally important that everybody who lives in a care provider unit has an advance care plan completed and their resuscitation status assessed when they are admitted to the provider. All staff working in the provider setting need to know which residents have a DNAR in place and which do not. If you carry out CPR against somebody's wishes, did you know that this could be perceived as assault?
