APPG report on safeguarding in faith settings - Positions of Trust

All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Safeguarding in Faith Settings (established in September 2018) this week published its second inquiry report which explores the extent to which the current provisions within the Sexual Offences Act, 2003 for ‘Positions of Trust’ and the offence of ‘abuse of a position of trust’ adequately enable the safeguarding of young people receiving services and support in faith settings.

'Positions of Trust: It's time to change the law' - includes five specific recommendations was launched in Parliament on Tuesday 28th January 2020 and calls on the government to amend the Sexual Offences Act 2003 so that the application of the definition of 'Positions of Trust' is not limited to professions listed in the Act but extended to any adult to which that description applies.

This inquiry was launched by the APPG in August 2019 with the objective to discover and document current knowledge relating to law and practice concerning ‘Positions of Trust’ within the SOA 2003, to ensure faith settings are sufficiently within scope to allow young people to be better protected from harm within the variety of such settings.

The report will be submitted to the Ministry of Justice to assist in the completion of a review of this legislation.
