Managing professional difficulties: procedure published

Professional disagreements should be seen as part of ‘healthy’ professional working relationships. Practitioners should be encouraged to give and/or receive professional challenge in a constructive and positive way.

This Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board (NSAB) procedure helps practitioners and agencies find resolution when they have professional differences about safeguarding of an adult with care and support needs at risk of abuse and harm.

Regardless of professional differences, the safety of the adult with care and support needs must be paramount. For disputes within agencies, in-house procedures should be followed. This document relates to the resolution of differences between agencies.

Effective working together depends on resolving disagreements to the satisfaction of workers and agencies, and a belief in a genuine partnership and joint working to safeguard adults. The principle is to resolve disagreements at the lowest possible level so that each agency is satisfied with the outcome for adults and their families.

The document includes flowcharts to support partner organisations through an escalation process and routes for individual agencies.
