MPs debate modern slavery

On Tuesday 09 October MPs discussed the issue of modern slavery in the UK debated. The debate was led by Gareth Snell MP (Labour, Stoke on Trent). The Local Government Association (LGA) have produced a briefing which is available on the LGA website.

Concerns raised across the floor included compliance with supply chain reporting, as well as the role of local authorities in tackling modern slavery in their areas. There was also cross-party support for extending victim support beyond the current provision.

Responding to the debate the Minister, Victoria Atkins MP, confirmed that work is underway to reform the national referral mechanism (NRM) and the support available for victims once they exit the NRM. She also said that the recruitment of a new Independent Anti-slavery Commissioner is ongoing.
